When putting your home on the market, finding ways to make the property more appealing is essential. A simple way to make your home more attractive to potential buyers is to take steps to brighten each of the rooms in the house. After all, a dark room is not only dreary, but it also makes it difficult to make out the features of the space. Therefore, whether your room is on the dark side or not, incorporating these five tips will help to brighten up each room while helping to make the property more appealing to potential buyers.

Tip #1: Choose the Right Lighting

Incorporating more lighting into the room may seem like an obvious step to take toward brightening up the space, but be sure to take the time to select the right type of lighting in order to achieve the best results possible. If the room is a size that can handle a larger fixture, consider going with a big statement piece to help bring more light to the room. A big chandelier or a statement pendant are two great options. Not only will then add more light to your room, but they will also add interest to the overall décor of the room.

Tip #2: Get Creative with Mirrors

Creative mirror placement can go a long way toward helping to further illuminate a space and create the illusion of depth. If there is a small window in the room, considering hanging a mirror on the opposite wall in order to allow the natural light to bounce off from it. Installing lighting fixtures next to mirrors will also help to brighten up the space. This is particularly important in the bathroom, where poor lighting is frustrating when trying to get ready. Light fixtures with bare bulb designs are especially helpful when it comes to brightening up a space.

Tip #3: Select the Right Lamps

Lamps are a good option for adding more light to a space. Not only are they versatile in terms of style, but they can also be easily moved to add light wherever it may be needed at the time. Even better, they can be taken with you after you sell your home. Floor lamps, table lamps and wing arm lamps are all great additions for illuminating an otherwise dark room.

Tip #4: Use a Gloss Finish

To help create the illusion of brightness, consider painting your ceiling with a gloss finish rather than matte. Gloss allows light to bounce off of the surface of the ceiling, thereby helping to “open up” the space.

Tip #5: Utilize Accent Pieces

Loud accents can help to make a room appear less gloomy while also enhancing the overall style of the room. Unique architectural details or selective use of color, for example, can help to create interest in a space that is lacking natural light. Some ideas to consider include faux ceiling beams, woodwork panels painted in rich color or colorful patterned wallpaper.
