Enjoying Free Music in Boston

Boston is no stranger to outdoor concerts, with many free music events taking place throughout the year. For those with a particular passion for jazz, blues, Latin and groove acts, however, the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival offers one of the best opportunities for free live music the area has to offer. The event also features an array of food, arts and crafts vendors as well as activities for kids each year.

Taking place on Columbus Avenue between Burke Street and Mass Ave in the South End of Boston on the last Saturday of September every year, the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival takes place on three stages along a six block stretch. Hundreds of thousands of music fans have attended the event over the years since it was first started. As such, it is no surprise that the event is often referred to as Boston’s biggest block party.

This year, the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival will take place on September 26 from noon until 6:00 pm with a theme of “Jazz: The Voice of the People.” The event will feature Berklee College students and faculty along with local musicians and established musical acts. The full list of events and performers can be accessed by visiting the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival website.

As usual, this year’s event will offer plenty of activities and fun for children to enjoy. This year, the Natixis Family Park will offer inflatables, facepainting, an instrument petting zoo, cotton candy and more. KidsJam will also make an appearance at the event.

KidsJam is a free early childhood education music program available to residents of the Boston area. Provided by the Music Education Department at Berklee College of Music, the weekly program is offered at Berklee’s Café 939 during the school year and during special events throughout the summer. The program is designed to introduce young children to activities that are essential to receiving a well-rounded music education. Among these are playing instruments, singing and sound exploration, responding to music, creating, listening and learning about various musical concepts and instruments. Free sessions provided by Berklee faculty, staff and music education students will be provided throughout the Beantown Jazz Festival.

Located in Boston, the Berklee College of Music is the largest independent college of contemporary music in the world. While the college is best known as the foremost institute for studying jazz and modern American music, it also offers courses in a wide variety of historic and contemporary styles. Among these are bluegrass, flamenco, hip hop, reggae, rock and salsa. Berklee’s students have a history of going on to achieve great accomplishments in the world of music, with 99 of the school’s alumni having collected 229 Grammy Awards as of 2013. Some of the school’s famous alumni include Juliana Hatfield, Bruce Hornsby and Joey Kramer.
