The annual Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival will take place on September 24th. With a theme of “Jazz: Peace Supreme,” the festival will feature performances of jazz, blues, funk, Latin and groove acts.
Dubbed “Boston’s biggest block party,” the annual outdoor party has entertained hundreds of thousands of people over the years. As usual, the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival will feature local musicians as well as Berklee College students and faculty members as they join established artists on each of the three performance stages.
Fun for the Whole Family
The festival also offers activities for kids, including the KidsJam and an instrument petting zoo. Both activities provide kids with the opportunity to begin exploring, appreciating and learning more about music. KidsJam itself is a free early childhood music education program provided by the Music Education Department at Berklee College of Music to the Boston-area community. The program, which runs weekly throughout the academic year, also hosts special events during the summer. The goal of the program is to provide children with a variety of activities designed to produce a well-rounded music education. Activities typically included in the program are:
- Sound exploration
- Playing instruments
- Creating, listening and responding to music
- Learning about musical concepts and instruments
At the 2016 Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival, faculty, staff and music education students will provide free music sessions throughout the day. The instrument petting zoo also provides guests with the opportunity to explore a variety of instruments in a hands-on way. At “the zoo,” faculty and students demonstrate how to hold and play a variety of different instruments. A variety of food and drink vendors will also have tasty items available for purchase, while arts and crafts vendors will have unique gifts and other items for sale.
Take a Tour
In addition to listening to great musicians and participating in hands-on music activities, the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival also offers The High Notes of Jazz Tour of Roxbury. Once considered to be Boston’s “jazz mecca,” Lower Roxbury was the site of many of the East Coast’s most famous clubs and after-hours venues. During the tour, visitors have the opportunity to hear unique narratives created from the memories of former residents, musicians and club owners.
The Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival will take place on Saturday, September 24th, from noon until 6:00 pm. The festival takes place on three stages along a 6-block stretch of Columbus Avenue that runs between Burke Street and Mass Ave in the historic South End. The festival can be easily reached by public transportation and numerous parking garages are available in the area. The Sheraton Boston Hotel, Hilton Boston Back Bay, Eliot Hotel and Lenox Back Bay Boston have all contracted to offer special rates for festival-goers. Mention the Berklee Bean Town Jazz Festival to receive the lower rate.
