Blessing the Fleet
The time honored tradition of Blessing the Fleet dates back many centuries to Mediterranean fishing communities. During the blessing, a local priest would bless ships to ensure a bountiful and safe season. The practice was later brought to the United States by immigrants who adhered to strong Catholic traditions. Today, these blessings can range from simple prayers to multi-day festivals featuring parades, feasts and dancing.
While blessings are far less common today than they once were, they are still held in many fishing communities throughout the world. The blessing that takes place at the Boston Seafood Festival is meant to pay homage to old fishing traditions while honoring the many great fisherman and the creatures they hunt.
