Massachusetts Military Heroes Garden of Flags Memorial Day Services
Every year, the Massachusetts Military Heroes organization plants 37,000 flags in front of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Boston Common. Known as the Garden of Flags, the display is meant to commemorate each of the Massachusetts service members who lost their lives defending the United States since the Revolutionary War. The flags will be put out on Wednesday, May 25th at 1:00 pm and will remain in place through until Sunday on Monday, May 30th. A ceremony honoring those service members who were lost in Iraq and Afghanistan will be held on Thursday, May 26th at 10:30 am.
Back Bay Fens Memorial Day Service
2016 will mark the 70th Annual Memorial Day service to take place at the Veterans Memorial Park in the Back Bay Fens in the Fenway neighborhood. The event will take place on Saturday, May 28th at 11:00 am. Also referred to as the Sergeant Charles Andrew MacGillivary Memorial in honor of a local hero, Veterans Memorial Park is a tranquil green space characterized by monuments commemorating those who fought in the Vietnam War, the Korean War and World War II.
Honor & Tribute: Memorial Day Concert
The Honor & Tribute: Memorial Day Concert will be held on Monday, May 30th at 5:00 pm at the Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common. The free concert will feature the Boston City Singers as well as the Metropolitan Wind Symphony Orchestra.
Free Admission to the Museum of Fine Arts
If you want to take in a great cultural experience, you might want to head over to the Museum of Fine Arts on Memorial Day, at which time you can enjoy free admission from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. Many special family activities will take place on Memorial Day as well as special exhibits and performances, including a musical performance from the Sociedad Latina’s Youth Artists Mastery group. Special exhibits on display on Memorial Day will include #techstyle, Visiting Masterpieces: Pairing Picasso and The Idea of North: The Paintings of Lawren Harris.

You can also celebrate our nation’s history and those who helped win our independence by taking a self-guided tour of the Freedom Trail. Another option is to take a Memorial Day tour with Boston by Foot, which is a non-profit organization offering walking tours at very reasonable prices. Memorial Day tours typically involve walking around the historic Beacon Hill neighborhood and the Victorian Back Bay neighborhood in addition to the Freedom Trail.
