Considering a Move to Cambridge? Take a Look at the 2013 Top 25 List of Cambridge Employers

shutterstock_62144479Cambridge has much to offer to those who are interested in living north of Boston. Not only is the idyllic city home to the prestigious universities of Harvard and MIT, but it also has many excellent employment opportunities available to its residents. In fact, the City of Cambridge recently released its list of the Top 25 Employers in Cambridge, and the employers listed are quite impressive.

Altogether, the employers included on the list account for approximately 48,000 of the city’s full-time jobs. This represents about 40% of the workforce. Seven of the employers on the list are pharmaceutical companies or research institutes that are involved in genetics research, biotechnology and drug development. Collectively, these employers employ more than 9,000 people. Although Cambridge is known for its internet and software innovations, many of these companies are small firms. Nonetheless, five of those companies listed on the Top 25 are within this sector.

Although the annual Top 25 list sees little movement with some employers – Harvard and MIT, for example, have held the first two spots on the list every sinze 1986 – a total of 55 different employers have had a spot on the list at some point over the years. For 2013, the Top 25 employers in terms of the number of people employed were:

The largest employer, Harvard University, employed 11,298 people in 2013 compared to 11,167 in 2012. The Top 25 employer with the lowest number of employees, Lesley University, employed 541 people in 2013 compared to 498 in 2012. The majority of the employers on the list followed the same pattern of employing more people in 2013 than they did in 2012, with only 9 showing a reduction in force.
