Fenway Park to Host Annual Futures at Fenway on July 13

If you have long dreamed of seeing a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, but you want to keep the cost down while ensuring there is a family-friendly atmosphere, you might want to take a look at the Futures at Fenway program. The annual baseball event features two minor league affiliates of the Boston Red Sox as they play regular season games against other teams from within their leagues.

The History of Futures at Fenway

The Futures at Fenway program was started by Boston mayor Thomas Menino in 2006, with the first game taking place on August 26, 2006. At the time the program was implemented, it was the first time a minor league game had been played at the stadium since 1977. When the program was implemented in 2006, it drew the largest crowds ever seen at a regular season minor league game. The program has continued every year with additional activities and events being added on a regular basis. At the August 18, 2012 game, for example, the event had a Star Wars theme with a costume parade and characters in attendance. In 2013, fans were allowed to bring dogs for the first time as they came to watch the Portland Sea Dogs take on the Harrisburg Senators.

As the oldest park in Major League Baseball, the park itself is also seeped in history. Opened on April 20, 1912, the park has hosted the Boston Red Sox since it opened. Due to the age of the park combined with its location within the dense Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood, the park has been expanded and renovated on numerous occasions. Nonetheless, it remains the fourth smallest of MLB ballparks in terms of seating capacity and the second smallest in terms of total capacity. It is also one of eight fields that cannot hold at least 40,000 spectators. On March 7, 2012, the park was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Enjoying a Game at Fenway

With the Futures at Fenway game timed to take place while the Red Sox are on a road trip, the park is free to host the minor league doubleheader. In addition to offering lower ticket prices than the major league games, some concession items are also available at a lower cost than they typically are during a Red Sox game. Other special events will also take place during the event, including a special screening of the movie Field of Dreams. The movie will be shown approximately 30 minutes after the game ends.

The 2015 Futures at Fenway game, which will feature the Lowell Spinners against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, is scheduled to take place on July 13 at 3:30 pm with gates opening at 2:00 pm. Tickets start at $15 each. Dogs will once again be invited to attend the game, with designated sections being made available for owners and their dogs. Tickets must also be purchased for the dogs and you must print out a wavier and bring it with you in order to gain admission with your dog
