Spring is only a short time away. For most of us, the warmer weather simply cannot come fast enough. As the weather starts to warm up and you start to look anxiously forward to spending time outdoors, there are a few indoor tasks that you should be sure to address. My completing these simple Spring Cleaning tasks, you can keep your home in proper running order while keeping yourself and your family safe.
Spring Cleaning Task #1: Test Your Air Conditioning
It may not be time yet to start running your air conditioning, but you want to be sure everything is in proper running order once the heat does strike. If there is a problem, it will likely be cheaper to get it repaired in early spring. In addition, air conditioning repairmen are quite busy in the summertime. If you get any necessary repairs completed in the spring, you probably won’t have to wait as long to get the job done.
Spring Cleaning Task #2: Check the Caulk
Caulking around doors and windows can become worn out over time, particularly after withstanding the harsh winter elements. Not only can this lead to energy loss, but it also allows moisture to get inside the caulking. As a result, you may develop mold. While repairing caulking, take a few minutes to clean the windows and to replace any screens that have become torn or damaged.
Spring Cleaning Task #3: Replace Fire Extinguishers and Replace Smoke Alarm Batteries
To ensure smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are in proper working order, it is a good idea to set aside a certain time each year to replace them. Spring and Fall are good times to handle these tasks, with many people doing them at the same time they change their clocks for daylight savings time. When checking fire extinguishers, make sure they meet current safety standards and check the gauge to be sure they are fully charged. When checking fire alarms, replace the batteries and make sure they are clean from dust.
Spring Cleaning Task #4: Steam Clean Carpets
Spring is a good time to deep clean the carpets in your home. This is another task that you should complete at least twice per year. Not only will your carpets look better, but it will also remove any mites and other allergens that may have collected in your carpet over the winter.
Spring Cleaning Task #5: Clean the Refrigerator
If you have a coil-back refrigerator, it should also be cleaned twice per year. To do this, simply use a vacuum to remove all of the dust and build-up that has formed in the coils over the past several months. While you are cleaning the coils, take some extra time to wipe down the inside and outside of the refrigerator as well.
