Free Memorial Day Community Weekend at the Museum of Fine Arts

To demonstrate its support of the City of Boston, The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) will opens its doors to visitors from Boston and will feature three free days of art and family fun.
The event, called “Boston I Love,” will bring the community together to celebrate the spirit of the city in the wake of the attack at the Boston Marathon. Visitors will be able to contribute to The One Fund Boston at donation boxes located throughout the Museum.
Enjoy special exhibitions—including three paintings on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as art making, gallery tours, family activities, and a community art project. All on-site contributions this weekend will be donated to The One Fund Boston.
A 10 percent discount on select items will also be offered at the MFA Bookstore and Shop, Huntington Avenue Shop, and Exhibition Shop, as well as online at www.mfashop.com.
“To Boston With Love” in the Shapiro Family Courtyard
This incredible, heartfelt exhibit will feature hundreds of hand-sewn squares created by quilters in the US and around the world, including Canada, England, Ireland, France, Holland, Australia, Japan, Brazil, and Africa. Each mini quilt delivers a message of peace and hope and is signed on the back by the artist, with his or her country. The project was a grass-roots effort conceived by Berene Campbell of Vancouver, Canada, and organized locally by Amy Friend of West Newbury.

The Empire state Sinfonia is joined by members of the Boston classical music community in presenting a concert to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. This memorial will also celebrate the wonderful spirit of hope, resilience and community displayed by those affected by the tragedy.

In a special Memorial Day event, Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the City of Boston Veterans’ Services will present “Remembrance 2013; a musical tribute to our fallen heroes.” In collaboration with the Marriott Long Wharf, Boston Parks and Recreation and the non-profit organization Military Friends, the service will take the shape of a sunset event on the waterfront set to musical performances by the Metropolitan Wind Symphony and the Boston City Singers.
