Getting Artsy at the Sand Sculpting Festival
The artists who complete in the New England Sand Sculpting Festival must adhere to a strict set of rules. First, each is provided with 10 tons of sand and given an 18’ x 18’ square exhibit area. Artists are also only allowed to work on the sculpture for a total of 24 hours, though this time may be spread out over several days. While the artists may use forms to mold components of their work, those forms must be removed before the artwork is judged. The artwork is judged on four different criteria: degree of difficulty, originality/creativity, quality and overall visual impact. Thousands of dollars are given away as prizes each year.
Located six miles north of downtown Boston, Revere Beach was once considered Boston’s Coney Island. While the beach no longer has an amusement park, it is still home to a lovely beachfront and many attractive condos. The Sand Sculpting Festival will take place north of the bandstand on Revere Beach Boulevard, which is between Beach Street and Shirley Avenue.
