If you enjoy skiing, you will be glad to know that area slopes will soon be open. In fact, most New England ski areas open on Thanksgiving weekend. Here is a look at a few of the ski areas that you might want to check out this year.
Killington Mountain Resort and Ski Area
Located near Killington in central Vermont, the Killington Mountain Resort and Ski Area is the largest ski area in the eastern United States. The area is also distinguished by its 3,050 foot vertical drop, which is the largest in New England. The area also features the 6.2 mile beginner Juggernaut trail, which is the longest trail in the eastern United States. The area features 21 lifts and 141 trails ranging from beginner to expert. The area consists of six interconnected mountains with Killington Peak considered the main peak. The peak is 4,241 feet in elevation, making it the highest peak in the state of Vermont.
Stowe Mountain Resort
Located near the town of Stowe in northern Vermont, Stowe Mountain Resort consists of two separate mountains. One of these mountains, Mount Mansfield, features a vertical drop of 2,360 feet, making it the fifth largest in New England. Boasting 116 trails and 39 miles of skiable terrain, the area receives an average of 333 inches of snow each season.
Loon Mountain Ski Resort
Located in Lincoln, New Hampshire within the White Mountain National Forest, Loon Mountain Ski Resort features one four-passenger gondola, one fixed-grip quad chair, one fixed-grip triple chair, three surface lifts, three detachable quad chairs and three fixed-grip double chairs. The area also boasts 53 trails on 324 acres of skiable terrain as well as a 2,109 foot vertical drop, which is the tenth largest in New England.
Bretton Woods Mountain Resort
Located within the White Mountain National Forest in the New Hampshire town of Bretton Woods, the Bretton Woods Mountain Resort features over 120 trails and 9 lifts capable of running 14,000 people per hour. While most of the trails have snowmaking, the area also receives an average of more than 200 inches of snow per year.
Located in the town of Newry in Main, Sunday River is one of the largest and most visited ski resorts in the state. The ski resort is characterized by its 2,340 foot vertical drop, which is the second largest in Maine and the sixth largest in New England. The resort features 16 lifts and 135 trails across eight mountain peaks.
Located in the Mad River valley within the town of Warren in Vermont, Sugarbush is one of the largest ski resorts in New England. The area boasts more than 4,000 acres of land, 578 of which are skiable. The resort features 16 ski lifts and 111 ski trails covering 53 miles. The resort’s 2,600 foot drop is the second largest in the state and the third largest in New England.
