Skiing in Boston

While Massachusetts may not be famous for its ski resorts, there are still plenty of great places to ski in the Boston area. In fact, here are some places you might want to consider visiting this season that are within an hour or so from the city.

Nashoba Valley Ski Area

Nashoba Valley Ski Area may not be as big or as well-known as some of the ski resorts found in New Hampshire, Maine or Vermont, but it does provide a relaxed atmosphere with skiing conveniently near to Boston. Nashoba offers two terraine parks, 16 trails ranging from beginner to expert and 8 lifts with lines that are typically short. Snow tubing, snowboarding, racing and downhill skiing are all available at Nashoba, as are equipment rentals and lessons. Nashoba is already open for the season and will remain open until mid-March.

Weston Ski Track

Offering affordable rental and access rates, the Weston Ski Track is located at the MDc Leo Martin Golf Course in Weston, Massachusetts. Featuring snowmaking equipment  and 15 kilometers of terrain that is on mostly level ground, the ski track is used for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing lessons and skate skiing. Night skiing and lessons for beginning skiers is also available.

Great Brook Ski Touring Center

Located just 25 miles west of downtown Boston, the Great Brook Ski Touring Center offers opportunity for cross-country skiing. Open until mid-March, the touring center features 10 miles of machine-groomed trails for various ability levels. Consisting mostly of flat land, the trail passes farmland, forests, ponds and streams. Ski and snowshoe rental are both available. If you have your own equipment, you can use the ungroomed trails for free.

Blue Hills Ski Area

Part of the Blue Hills Reservation, the Blue Hills Ski Area is owned by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The area covers about 60 acres and features 9 trails, 4 lifts and a vertical drop of 309 feet. The family-oriented ski area, which is only 30 minutes south of Boston, offers reasonable rates, rentals, lessons and lift tickets.

Wachusett Mountain

Standing at over 2,000 feet tall and boasting a vertical drop of 1,000 feet, Wachusett Mountain is the tallest mountain in Massachusetts to the east of the Connecticut River. Meaning “Great Hill” in Algonquin, the mountain boasts 110 ski-able acres  and 25 trails rated for Beginner, Intermediate and Expert. Wachusette Mountain, which is about 90 minutes from Boston, is the only ski area near to the city to offer its own lodging.
