If you are looking for a challenge with beautiful views, you might want to look into participating in the fifth annual Spectacle Island 5k. Not only does the event give you the opportunity to flex your legs as you run, but it also boasts panoramic views of the harbor and downtown Boston as you run the trail along historic Spectacle Island.
With both a 5K run and a kids’ half-mile fun run taking place, there are opportunities for participants of all ages to join in the race events. To register for the event, you can either register online or register on the day of the event. The cost for adult participants is $40, while children are $20 per participant. Adult participants receive a t-shirt, a chip timer, round-trip ferry transportation to the island and a free beer on the ferry upon returning to the mainland, while children receive round-trip transportation and a ticket for a picnic lunch. Awards will also be handed out in both categories. Adult spectators can also purchase a round-trip ferry ticket for $20, while children’s tickets are $10 each. Children under three are transported for free.
Taking place rain or shine, the Spectacle Island 5K will start and finish on the island. Ferries to the island will depart from both Long Wharf North and the Hingham Shipyard. Registration begins at 8:00 am while the pre-race warm-up and stretch will take place at 9:00 am on the promenade. The actual 5K race will begin at 9:30 with the “Race to the Saddle” Kids Fun Run starting at 10:45 am. The Kids Fun Run is just half-mile in length and is open to children under 12.
In addition to the runs taking place on June 14th, the event will also feature field day competitions, kids’ activities and opportunities to participate in post-race yoga classes and a picnic lunch. The kids’ activities will take place at the Visitor Center and will take place from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The Picnic Lunch, which will also take place near the Visitor Center, will take place from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, with the 5K Award Ceremony taking place at 11:15 am. Baggage Check will close at 1:15 pm.
Even if you can’t make it out to Spectacle Island for the annual 5K event, it is worth making a visit to the island when you have the opportunity. Situated in Boston Harbor, the 105-acre island is just four miles offshore from downtown Boston. Considered to be a part of the city, the island boasts a public park and marina, a café, a lifeguard swimming beach, five miles of walking trails and a café. In addition to being serviced by ferries throughout the year, it is also serviced by a shuttle boat every day throughout the summer.
This year’s Spectacle Island 5k, which is also referred to as the Flag Day 5K road race, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 14th. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Boston Harbor Island Alliance, which is a non-profit partner of the Boston Harbor Islands National Park area.
