Boston has many organizations that are designed to help those in need, but perhaps one of the most unique and interesting organizations meant to help people during the holidays is Globe Santa. With more than 1 million families and over 3 million children served by the organization over the past 60 years, Globe Santa has certainly brought smiles and joy to many people over the years.
What is Globe Santa?
Created in 1956, Globe Santa delivers holiday gifts to local children in need. The sole purpose of the organization is to bring joy to local children by providing them with presents during the holiday season. In its first year, the organization collected $51,000 in donations and provided assistance to 6,200 families throughout the Greater Boston area. Since then, the number of families requesting and receiving assistance through the organization has continued to grow.
How Does Globe Santa Receive its Funding?
Globe Santa exists due to the generosity of the Boston community. All donations made to the organization go directly toward supporting the Globe Santa program. Most of the organization’s donations come from individuals, families and other organizations within the community. Donations can be made by calling 617-929-2007 or by mailing a check or money order to The Boston Globe Foundation c/o Globe Santa Fund PO Box 491 Medford, MA 02155-0005. Donations can also be made online.
How Does Globe Santa Work?
Families with children who are 12-years-old or younger and who live in Globe Santa’s delivery area can request assistance by submitting a holiday gift verification form from the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) or from another approved agency. Families must also writer a letter describing their situation or telling Globe Santa why they are seeking holiday gifts for their children. The letter and completed form must then be sent to Globe Santa PO Box 55820 Boston, MA 02205-5820. Though the deadline for requesting assistance is passed this holiday season, you can still look ahead toward next year to ensure your children are included on Globe Santa’s list.
