St. Patrick’s Day 5K Raises Funds for Boys and Girls Club in Boston

#Are you looking for something fun and active to do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? If so, you might want to consider participating in the Edgerley Family South Boston Club St. Patrick’s Day 5K. Not only is it a fun way to spend some time, but it is also for a worthwhile cause that helps youth in the area.

Taking a Closer Look at the Race

The fun and festive Edgerley Family South Boston Club St. Patrick’s Day 5K is a fun and festive run that takes place before the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston. Starting and ending at the Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club at the corner of F and West Sixth Street, the route takes West Sixth Street to Dorchester Street before heading down East Broadway to Farragut Statue. It then moves up East Broadway to West Broadway before continuing down E Street to West Sixth and back to the Boys & Girls Club. A waterstop will be included along the way, while times will be monitored with BibTag chip electronic timing.

Since the course is not certified, it may be a few feet shy of an actual 5K. It will still offer its challenges, however, with a few hills thrown in the course along the way. In addition to participating in the 5K run, all participants get to enjoy raffle prizes and refreshments. The first 650 to register for the event will also receive an official race shirt that has been designed by Dropkick Murphys. All proceeds go to benefit the South Boston Boys & Girls Club.

Making a Difference for Boston Youth

All proceeds from the Edgerley Family South Boston Club St. Patrick’s Day 5K go toward benefiting the Boys and Girls Club, which provides an age-appropriate setting for youth to enjoy a variety of activities. The goal of the Boys and Girls Club is to ensure area youth have a place where they can enjoy physical and emotional safety while feeling a sense of belonging. Members engage in activities meant to increase their critical thinking, social, physical, artistic and technological skills. To achieve these goals, the club offers:

  • Tutoring and homework help
  • Music, dance, visual arts and creative writing instruction
  • Sports, fitness and recreation designed to increase social skills and assist with stress management
  • Computer Clubhouse with an interactive computer lab as well as use of technology incorporated into libraries, recreation areas and education centers
  • Leadership programs complemented by specialized programs designed for specific age groups
  • Life skills education and training guided by licensed social workers

Registration for the Edgerley Family South Boston Club St. Patrick’s Day 5K, which has taken place every year since 1940, is $25. Participation is capped off at the first 1,750 registrants. The race starts at 11:00 am on Sunday, March 20th. With the race taking place right before the parade, you can easily cheer on the racers before watching the parade if you do not wish to participate in the 5K.
