The 32nd Annual Chowderfest is part of the 4th of July festival Boston Harborfest. It is locally referred to as the Chowdahfest. It’s a competition between several restaurants located in the greater Boston area for the best New England style clam chowder. The Harborfest is week-long event, a celebration of the maritime and colonial history of Boston.
The Boston Chowderfest’s venue will be at the gated area of the City Hall Plaza. A booth will be set up on the day of the event where people can get their tickets. The tickets usually go on sale at 10:00 in the morning.
Boston’s Best Chowder
Visitors can walk up the canopy of the participating restaurants and they will be given samples of the clam chowder. You can taste as much chowder as you like, or perhaps re-try your favorite chowder. And when you have already decided, you can vote for the restaurant that made the best chowder. At the end of the event, these votes will be tallied and the winner is announced, the “Boston’s Best Chowder”.
The styles for the chowder can range from thin and soupy with minced clams to extremely thick and creamy with potatoes. If you consider yourself as a big fan of clam chowder, this is definitely a must-attend event. But if you are a simple tourist, it is a fun and great way to taste varying kinds of the clam chowder.
More than two thousand gallons of New England clam chowder will be served out to the attendees of the event at the Boston City Hall Plaza. Some of the participating restaurants for this year’s celebration are Anthem Kitchen + Bar, Chart House, Hyatt Harborside Grill, Ipswich Clambake Company and so much more.

Clam Chowder is any type of chowders that contains clams and broth. Along with the clams are diced potatoes, onions, occasionally sautéed with salt, pork, or bacon. Celery is frequently added too. Adding other vegetables to the meal is uncommon, but you might find small carrot strips, included primarily for color. A little of parsley serve the same purpose too. For garnish and flavoring, bay leaves may be added. It is believed that clams were added to chowder because of the ease in harvesting them.
The New England clam chowder is often based with milk or cream. Most chowders are made with potatoes, onions and clams.
